Soft Pants, Sweat Pants and Hot Pants

There is a theme that keeps rising to the top lately and it is all about pants...the kind you wear when no one is looking. Last night it became clear to me that I must talk about it. Between watching Saturday Night Live and nodding off, I saw a mildly funny skit about holiday sweatpants, they weren’t actually sweatpants but printed pj pants worn by a half dozen cast members dancing and singing a nonsensical song. There was not much to this skit, there were other skits far funnier but it was about …pants, the kind of pants you wear at home when you want to be comfy and you really, really, really don’t care.
And last week I was watching an interview with Julianne Moore about the Oscar buzz for her new movie and she ended the interview by saying she loves being at home in her “soft pants”. Soft pants??? I mean we all have those pants, the soft, worn-out, too big, grossly discolored pants we wont throw away. My first thought was …”what a stupid name?” But it has grown on me, now I like the phrase, it’s powerful… I will now call my version of those pants…SOFT PANTS….say it softly…sssoft paaants.
I have 4 pair of soft pants. The first being a 10 year old pair of black Joan Vass knitted pants with a rib hem and hole in the back, the second is a black pair of La Perla flared leg cotton jersey pants (this by the way is the only pair I am allowed to leave the house in, and in a few years they will become homebound as well). And last but not least the two pair of Gap Body pants circa. 2007, in khaki and heather grey, relegated to 3rd and 4th place for no reason other than they are not black. I am certain everyone man, woman and child has at least 2 pair of soft pants.

Thankfully, I do not own any hot pants, they were discarded years ago, but I lamented them while watching the wonderful James Brown movie “Get On Up” on a flight from LA last week. Sadly the soundtrack did not include the song “Hot Pants”, one of my favorites from the Godfather of Soul! Perhaps it is time for a hot pants revival….only to be worn at home!
